Motorola RIZR Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition

Files under Motorola | 1 Comment

motorola z8 ferrari editionWhat do you do when your are way behind your rivals in current mobile phone offerings, constantly loosing your market share, bleeding money and are late with the production of your next flagship (which still is a generation worse in some features then offerings by others) for more then 2 months?

I’m talking about Motorola and it’s MOTO Z10 smartphone that was supposed to go on sale last October.

Well, you start leaking the details to the press through your branch managers, about what an awesome line-up of phones you have planned for the next year. And then start copying meaningless design/co-branding additions, your rivals did months ago, and add bundles to a year old flagship you have now.

In addition to Ferrari colors and logos, MOTO Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition comes bundled with 2 Ferrari videos, pre-registration to the official Ferrari site (www.ferrariworld.com), custom Ferrari wallpapers and ringtones, direct links to to online Magazines like Top Gear, Auto Express, GQ, Esquire and Autosport, and a bundled “The Bourne Identity” movie.

I’m sure it will appeal to some diehard Ferrari and MOTO fans, but otherwise it’s just plain old Motorola Z8 RIZR phone.

And it won’t even be available for Christmas. MOTO Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition will come on sale through Ferrari Store and major Motorola retailers in Q1, 2008.

Leaked Motorola Z12 handset with Kodak 5-mp camera

Files under Motorola | Leave a Comment

Motorola Z12Motorola announced, a few moths ago, that 2008 will come with an amazing line-up of Motorola super phones, one of them packing a 8 Megapixel camera and optical zoom.

While there is no certain information about the existence of the 8 Megapixel handset (apparently called Motorola Skarven), we now have the first leaked photo of Motorola Z12, also known as Motorola X Pixl.

Part of the MOTO ZINE family, together with Motorola Z8 and Motorola Z10, Motorola Z12 will bring a 5 Megapixel camera with Xenon Flash, created in collaboration with Kodak. From the leaked photo, it seems the camera doesn’t pack optical zoom, although it would have been a great feature. But let’s not rush on judging the handset, since there is no official info about its specifications.

The image showing the back of Motorola Z12 first appeared on a Chinese website, then spread on the Internet. It is most likely that the phone has a slider design, despite the fact that previous information announced the handset to come in a compact candybar form. Other previous reports said the Z12 will provide GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity, and that’s about all is known about the device. Anyway, when released, Motorola Z12 will try to stand beside super phones like Nokia N95 or Samsung G800.

Even though everyone believes that this (meaning the handset from the leaked photo) is Motorola Z12, we might be wrong and the picture could show another handset from Motorola’s future line-up. Which means that Motorola Z12 can actually be the phone named “Skarven”, so then it will come with 8 Megapixels and 3x optical zoom. It’s confusing, I know, but that’s how things go when there are only leaked images and no official details. I hope the US producer will soon make things clear and bring us some awesome details about its future phones.

T-Mobile Sidekick Slide power off problem

Files under Motorola | 2 Comments

motorola sidekick slide

T-Mobile USA suspended sales of the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide earlier this evening, November 16, after Motorola confirmed that some Sidekick Slide might inadvertently power off when the slide door on the front of the phone is opened or closed. As of right now, Motorola is clueless as to the root cause of the power cycle issue, but they’re doing everything humanly possible to get to the bottom of this problem.Sidekick Slide owners experiencing the unintended power cycle issue should contact T-Mobile Customer Care, or run to the nearest T-Mobile retail store, for help and to discuss available options (hmm, maybe not buy another phone made by Motorola?).

Motorola’s Sidekick Slide fleet has critical slide-mechanism flaw

Files under Motorola | 3 Comments

motorola sidekick slide

Early Sidekick Slide adopters are probably all too aware of the critical flaw plaguing their slide mechanism. Reports are coming in that the new Motorola Sidekick Slide, whose namesake takes after the cool sliding screen, will intermittently hard-reset (read: total data loss), or turn off upon actuation of the sliding screen. It seems a slightly loose battery is to blame for the sliding screen’s troubles - sliding the screen upwards jiggles the battery out of place and prompts a reboot or shutdown of the Sidekick Slide.

How did Motorola let such a design flaws slip through the cracks? We’re not sure. All we know is that there are a lot of people out there that are none too pleased to have to gamble with their Sidekick Slide’s data everytime they slide that screen open. On a positive note, the data is saved on Danger’s servers, so you can just download all your saved data after a hard-reset.

Come on, Motorola. A device named for the cool sliding mechanism should have had the slide-screen thoroughly tested before release.

Motorola Q9m

Files under Motorola | Leave a Comment

The Motorola Q9m has a slightly different shape than the Q9h. The edges are a bit more rounded, but the keyboard is the same. That’s a good thing since the Q9’s keyboard is really well designed. In terms of hardware buttons, the layout on the Q9m is similar, but lacks the Internet and Email buttons.

On the left side there are some major differences. There’s a regular MiniUSB jack for sync/charging where as the Q9h has a proprietary connector. There’s also a flap that covers the MiniSD slot as opposed to the MicroSD slot on the Q9h.

On the top, there’s a flap covering a standard 2.5mm audio jack. This is completely missing from the Q9h and is a very welcome addition to the Q9m.

On the right side, there’s an actual jog wheel instead of the up/down buttons on the Q9h. Again, this is a superior interface. Spinning the jog wheels lets you scroll, pressing it selects the item (though a small ridge makes this a bit difficult), and there’s an unlabeled button below which acts as the “back” button.

On the back is a slightly different arrangement of the camera lens and flash LED as well as a bit of a RAZR like ridge on the battery cover surrounding the stereo speakers.

Also note the extremely good looking red and black paint job on the Q9m. This is much better looking than the Q9h.
