Dual-sliders are nothing new. Having a dedicated numeric keypad in addition to a full-QWERTY keyboard is just so convenient. And, it seems, Sony Ericsson is giving some serious consideration to bringing that convenience to a future handset. In their patent application, entitled “Two-way sliding mobile terminal,” Sony Ericsson reveals plans to use what looks like a pop-out mechanism that features a full-QWERTY keyboard layout as well as a numeric keypad. The keyboard pops out lengthwise to become a keyboard. Holding the handset vertically, the keypad pops out widthwise.
This actually looks like a way better alternative to the dual-sliding setup that we’re used to seeing. By combining the keyboard and keypad onto a single pop-out slab, Sony Ericsson’s future dual-sliding jobbies should be slimmer than the current dual-sliding offerings. We sure hope the Japanese-Swedish company will actually apply this concept to a handset in the near-term.

After different rumors, a leaked image and leaked specifications, Sony Ericsson P3i recently appeared listed on the MSN China mobile website, along with what seems to be a real picture of the handset. This means that, most probably, an official launch of P3i will follow pretty soon, although it is said that it will not hit the
market until the second quarter of 2008. This is the time when the P5i model should be launched too, so we can hope that P3i will come faster.
The P3i image from the Chinese website looks a lot like the P1i and M600 models from Sony Ericsson and not like the leaked photo that appeared a few months ago, which is said to present the P3i phone. This can only make us think that the leaked photo was just an image of a concept phone that doesn’t really exist, even though many of us would have wished so, as the image reveals an impressive phone.
Awaiting for its official launch, we must say that Sony Ericsson P3i will come with very attractive features. It is said to have a 2.8 inch VGA screen, supporting a high 480 x 640 resolution. Also, the phone packs a 5-megapixel camera and excellent image handling performances, making it a perfect handset for photography lovers.
P3i is powered by a 332 MHz processor, it has 128 MB of RAM and features HSPA performances and WiFi connectivity. The new phone will also bring a fresh UIQ interface version, but there is no clear information about this fact.
We think the new Sony Ericsson P3i will be targeted for both personal and business users, since the picture from the Chinese website shows the Sony Walkman logo on the phone’s screen, denoting the fact that it provides evolved multimedia features.

Last month, the Mozilla Corporation promised to devote much more time and resources to a version of its web browser for smartphones. At that time, though, it didn’t specify which mobile operating systems would be getting a version of Firefox. This has now changed.
Christian Sejersen, who is heading up this project, has added a post to his blog that lists the OSs that are being targeted.
There is already a version of Mobile Firefox for Maemo, the version of Linux being run by the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. Mozilla is also considering updating this for the Nokia N810.
But it isn’t going to stop there. Sejersen also says a version for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6 is in development that will be available soon.
Goals for Mobile Firefox
In his blog post, Sejersen lays out the current goals for Firefox mobile:
- provide Mozilla’s standards-based open-source browser engine, optimized for mobile, that can be embedded by device manufacturers and others;
- produce a full-featured mobile browser including support for XUL-based add-ons, delivering on Firefox’s key principles of ease-of-use, security and accessibility;
- grow the Mozilla community in the mobile space;
- provide tools and documentation to help developers develop, debug and deploy web applications;
- do all of this work in the shared Mozilla source repositories so all platforms, desktop and mobile benefit each other

iPhone lovers will be happy to find that the next SDK, yet to be released by Apple in February 2008 will bring Java support. If the rumor is true, this will be a real milestone for Apple, which “by default” doesn’t like and doesn’t accept open source operating systems.
Even after Steve Jobs stated that “Java’s not worth building into the iPhone”, it seems that Apple reconsidered the fact that the iPhone is not really a business phone and agreed to give it some entertainment functions. Furthermore, you should know that Apple thought about embedding Java compatibility into the iPhone even before launching it on the market.
This is proved by the ARM11 family processor running at speeds up to 667 MHz that is compatible with Java accelerated engine Jazelle. Jazelle is a technology that executes the Java bytecode directly in hardware on many ARM microprocessors. It is able to achieve a similar high peak performance to software compilation techniques, with fast start-up and smooth execution in a small memory footprint. Jazelle also enables multitasking, which means that users will be able to run multiple Java applications and games in the background with minimal overhead.
Anyway, the source of this rumor is Sun’s technical evangelist for the Java mobile and embedded community, Terrence Barr, who said: “It is quite likely that people will start porting phoneME to the iPhone to provide Java that way. I expect that to happen as a community effort”. This will most likely happen at the beginning of next year when Apple is set to release another SDK for iPhone owners.
Even if there’s nothing official stated by Apple, let’s hope that this will become real and that iPhone fans will be able to use and play Java applications and games on their devices. I hope that this will also stop those that were “mourning” because of the limited functionality of the device.

Apple is asking for 30 per cent of subscriber revenue and can’t provide enough iPhones for a Christmas 2007 launch in Spain, according to Spanish technology company SevenClick, which reports that it got the information from a senior manager at Telefonica. It also claims the May 2008 launch will see a 3G version of Apple’s super-slate.
The company’s technology blog explains that Telefonica Spain would have liked to launch the iPhone this year, along with the UK, Germany and France, but Apple couldn’t supply enough handsets. Telefonica would also like to negotiate down the 30 per cent revenue cut before signing up.
It comes as no surprise that Apple is working on a 3G version of its handset, and May 2008 sounds like a reasonable time frame for such a device to be launched - barring technical problems. The real question is how the addition of 3G will impact the price and battery life.
The revelation that Apple is asking for 30 per cent of subscriber revenue is also unsurprising. The percentage varies between countries, and can be dependent on if a customer is switching networks or just upgrading their handset.
May 2008 is a sensible timeline for a 3G iPhone, but by that time the competition will be well established in Spain and elsewhere, so Apple is going to have to pull a few other surprises if it’s going to stay ahead.

Sony Ericsson wants to take its time with the developing and release of P5i and will bring it out on the market no sooner than the middle of year 2008. The device is supposed to pack some of the most evolved features and earn a leading place on the mobile phone
market.
The picture of this Sony Ericsson P5i handset is not an official one, but just the work of one of this producer’s fans. This makes it even clearer that the device was not ready for a release any time soon, as before such major events there usually comes a long period of leaked images, both real and not, as to arouse the interest of the customers. The device is highly evolved and deserves as much attention as possible and a mock-up picture will just not do it.
Sony Ericsson P5i should be a superphone, hotter than most of the others out on the market. The device is rumored to pack a 2.8 inch VGA display which should look great. It will also come equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, although this will stop being such a unique feature in time, as many other handset producers, including Sony Ericsson, have brought out devices capable of this high capture quality.
The device will also include GPS technology to help the owner find his way at all times. Moreover, it should also be a HSUPA enabled one, for the most evolved data transfers, at great speeds. There is also an internal memory of 128 MB, although an external memory solution is sure to be provided as well.
There is a long time left to wait until Sony Ericsson P5i hits the market, as this will happen only towards the middle of year 2008, in May or June. That is if nothing else goes on in the meanwhile to delay it even more.
