3 launches new Skype mobile phone

3 skype phone

Mobile phone provider 3 has launched a new handset that will allow users to make free calls over the internet via telephony service Skype. Users will also be able to use Skype’s instant messaging service, 3 said. But while people using Skype on their computers are able to make cheap global calls to any phone number, this will not be possible via the new 3 handset. Skype has about 246 million registered users worldwide and is one of the firms reshaping the global phone industry.
To date, mobile phone companies have been unwilling to let users freely access Skype via their handsets for fear that it would hurt their business. While it is possible to access Skype from a number of handsets, this has involved downloading third-party software, something that has put off the majority of users.

The Skype-phone will be the first instance of a phone operator launching a mass market device that is designed to allow free calling over the internet from a mobile, 3 said. “It takes an innovative operator… to challenge traditional thinking and offer the kind of product other operators are still shying away from,” said Skype’s acting chief executive, Michael van Swaaij. “It’s is now truly mobile. Skype has now taken a giant step forward in the mobile arena. And chief executive of 3 UK, Kevin Russell, said the firm wanted to make mobile internet more accessible. “Services need to be simple to access and affordable,” he said. “Mobile has the potential to massively increase access to internet calling.”

The service, launching on 2 November, will be accessed by a button on the handset. As well as the UK, the 3 Skype-phone will be launched in countries including Australia, Denmark, Italy and Hong Kong. Pay as you go customers will have to top up their account with at least 10P each month to qualify for the free Skype-to-Skype calls, 3 said.

Leaked shot of Treo 800w!

Files under Palm | Leave a Comment

palm 800wSeveral specifications of Palm Treo 800w were posted on the Treocentral’s web-forum in the end of September. According to them, the 800w works in CDMA networks, features WiFi, but lacks miniUSB. Yesterday, a picture of the future device was uploaded on the same forum. The design of the phone resembles most of the Palm’s products and especially Treo 680, 750 and 755p. The user, who uploaded the shot, also informs that the phone will be announced next month during a Sprint meeting and will be showed tomorrow at the Sprint Solutions show. That comes contrary to the previous rumors that the new Treo will appear with Verizon before Christmas

Opera Link Connects Mobile and Desktop Web Browsers

Files under News | Leave a Comment

Opera Mini 4 Beta 3

While mobile web usage is growing, an issue that seems to constantly pop up is how to synchronize shared content between mobile web browsers and their desktop counterparts. Opera Software seeks to do this through its new Opera Link solution. This is a combination of a MyOpera account and the desktop and mobile versions of the Opera web browser.

By working together, these allow users to have the same bookmarks appear on both the desktop version of Opera and on devices that use Opera Mini/Opera Mobile. In order to use the Opera Link service, users need to set up a MyOpera account and download the latest beta of Opera for desktops and laptops (version 9.5). Upon opening Opera, choose the menu option “synchronize bookmarks”. Login information will be asked for the MyOpera account, and then the bookmarks will be synced to that account. Then, from a smartphone the user needs to download and install Opera Mini 4 Beta and go to the menu option for “synchronizing bookmarks”. The bookmarks from the desktop version of Opera will then appear on the mobile device.Devices with a browser that does not support Opera Link can view synced bookmarks by going to link.opera.com and then clicking on the list of links there

The $831 IPhone

Files under iPhone | Leave a Comment

Apple doesn’t chat too much about the iPhone service fees AT&T shares with it. But the good folks at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (who make rules for how companies keep their books) have forced it to give us some clues. The accountants say that if someone promises to pay you money in the future (as AT&T does for each iPhone activated), you have to report this “deferred revenue” to investors.

All this makes Apple’s financial statement into a rather complex algebra problem. Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, has tried to do the math.

His bottom line is rather shocking: AT&T appears to be paying $18 a month, on average, to Apple for each iPhone activated on its network. That adds up to $432 over a two year contract. In other words, Apple will receive $831 for each iPhone it sells. (It’s a little less for iPhones sold in AT&T stores.) He can’t tell, of course, what makes up that average. Apple may, for example, receive higher payments for customers new to AT&T or those who buy more expensive monthly plans.

Mr. Munster says he was surprised by the numbers. He previously had estimated that Apple received $6.50 a month from AT&T. A carrier will typically subsidize the price of a high-end phone by about $200, he says. With the iPhone, AT&T is spreading the payments out over time, but ultimately putting up twice the typical amount.

The numbers will be harder to figure out from here on out, because Apple has started selling iPhones in Europe, where it has presumably different arrangements with carriers in Britain, Germany and France. But Mr. Munster says he figures the payments from them will be at least as much as from AT&T. And that certainly is consistent with reports that Apple has been demanding as much as 40 percent of the monthly fees from European carriers.

Still to Mr. Munster, this is incredibly bullish news for Apple investors. The higher revenue, of course, compounds Mr. Munster’s already optimistic view of the IPhones sales prospects. He figures Apple will sell a total of 3.4 million iPhones this year, 12.9 million next year and 45 million in 2009. The boom, he suggests, will come from increased features such as navigation and faster data speeds, as well as a lower price. He figures the average price of the iPhone, now $399 in this country, will drop to $300 in two years.

Mr. Munster assumes that the payments from carriers will then fall to $9 a month. As a result of this analysis, his estimate of Apple’s 2009 revenue increases from $36.2 billion to $42.8 billion. And the company’s net income per share increased by 14 percent. The bottom line: Mr. Munster’s target price for Apple’s stock, which today sells for around $184, goes to $250. (He had it pegged at $220).

All this shows how much incentive Apple has to maintain its exclusive deal with AT&T rather than to sell unlocked phones or cut deals with multiple carriers. AT&T is finding that an exclusive on the iPhone draws in new customers and lures existing ones to buy more expensive data plans. Carriers will keep paying Apple big kickbacks so long as its phones still stand out from the pack.

Trolltech Sells Out of Qtopia Greenphones, Migrates Community to Neo1973!

greenphoneagreenphoneaTrolltech today announced that it has sold its entire inventory of Qtopia Greenphones, the world’s first open phone built by the company to drive developer and operator interest. Trolltech, having accomplished its mission and committed to its roots as a software company, will not order additional units and will work closely with developers to migrate them to new, compatible reference platforms that have since been introduced to the market.

As an open, Linux-based mobile phone, Qtopia Greenphone was a project initiated by Trolltech to stimulate open development of mobile phones and to serve as an industry catalyst for the open phone movement. The pioneering initiative resulted in the creation of the first platform for open phones and, in turn, provided the developer community and mobile phone operators a platform on which to test and advance the creation and demonstration of new mobile technology services to foster mobile phone innovation. “At Vodafone Betavine we launched a web portal to interact with the developer community, said Stephen Wolak, on the Vodafone Betavine Team. “Greenphone was an innovative programme that responded well to open source developers, and mobile application experimentation. At Vodafone Betavine we believe there is a growing community and developer interest in open platform devices, Greenphone has certainly helped in the visibility of this growing trend.

“Going forward, Vodafone Betavine hopes to be stimulating the development and growing awareness of the Open Source community by housing their innovative work, and offering open API’s on the portal.”
Trolltech will continue to work with a number of device manufacturers to make Qtopia Phone Edition, the popular application platform for Linux-based mobile phones, available to further leverage the innovative work the community has already done on the Greenphone.

Since the introduction of Greenphone, Trolltech has given open source developers and commercial organizations the tools to create innovative, inspiring applications and services.
“The success of Greenphone is due in large part to the void it filled in the market by providing an open phone platform that could be used for experimentation and to build innovate applications,” said Benoit Schillings, Trolltech CTO. “While we have sold out our inventory of Greenphones, we continue to work with other hardware manufacturers which have open devices on the market. Our community now has a choice of phone platforms to work with and we aim to support additional platforms in the future.”

Trolltech will continue to support the Qtopia Greenphone community with new software releases in the coming months. In addition, community developers and organizations looking for phone hardware on which to develop Qtopia applications, Trolltech recommends the Neo1973 from FIC and OpenMoko. Trolltech is also currently working on support for additional devices and hopes to announce support for these devices in the coming weeks.
